Our friendship died in a fancy eatery in Hebden Bridge, amongst yummy mummies and Londoners visiting their second homes. Funny we got buried there, given the places we used to go.

The eatery was packed. A harassed-looking sixteen year old was the only visible member of staff. You clicked your fingers to get her attention and snapped when she did not know all the dishes by heart. You scolded her with such venom for delivering your Rustic Terrine Forestière too slowly that I could see her eyes well up. I looked at you, trying to decipher whether anything remained of the person I’d spent years of my life obsessed with, and had to admit no such person existed, maybe never had. As I began gathering my stuff you asked where I was going, confused at first, then desperate. Your face turned purple with anger and your own eyes started to mist. I felt torn about leaving, cruel even. I was the last person left who still cared about you and what I’d seen earlier that day made me realise you needed help. Then I looked again at the waitress and decided I couldn’t be the one to help you.
